Flexsys Strengthens its Decarbonization Goals by Committing to Science-Based Target
June 1, 2023
Today, Flexsys, a world leader in the production of best-in-class rubber chemicals and solutions, announced plans to reduce its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in-line with the Science Based Targets initiative – SBTi. SBTi, a partnership between the UN Global Compact, CDP, World Resources Institute and World Wide Fund for Nature, provides companies with a clearly-defined path to reduce emissions in line with the Paris Agreement goals.
Flexsys plans to work closely with SBTi to determine targets for reducing Scope 1 and 2 emissions at the pace and scale required to limit global temperature rise to 1.5oC. In addition to reducing GHG emissions from its own operations, the new target will also include reduction efforts for its supply chain and the products Flexsys sells to global tire manufacturers (Scope 3 emissions).
“As we continue to distinguish ourselves as a leader in the quest for more sustainable additives, we are increasing our own commitments for the benefit of our customers and the planet,” said Sandip Tyagi, CEO, Flexsys. “Pursuing a science-based target is a natural extension of our sustainability leadership and underscores our commitment to help our industry achieve its aggressive climate goals.”
These new goals support decarbonization efforts already underway as part of Flexsys’ sustainability roadmap, such as in-region sourcing, purchase of renewable electricity, and process optimization.
In 2022, the company achieved a Gold EcoVadis Sustainability Rating, scoring in the top 6% of chemical manufacturers globally in sustainability performance. The Gold Rating reflects the long legacy of innovation, safety and resource efficiency for which Flexsys is well known.
Flexsys is also expanding its investments in support of its goal of achieving 100% sustainable raw materials by 2040, a priority for the tire industry. Specifically, the company is exploring opportunities to incorporate renewable and recycled materials in its products while maintaining performance. Recently, Flexsys announced a cooperative research and development agreement (CRADA) with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to explore more sustainable and bio-based alternatives for 6-para-phenylene-diamine (6PPD), a widely used tire antidegradant.
